Encore! Give Your Old Concert T-Shirts New Life as a Cozy Keepsake
Hey there! I’m Anisa, the heart and hands behind The Quilted Tee by The Crafty Author. If you’re anything like me, you probably have a drawer (or three) filled with memories that you just can't bear to part with. I’m talking about those concert t-shirts. You know the ones: the shirt you bought at the merchandise stand after screaming your lungs out at your first big arena show, or the one that’s so thin you can practically see through it, but it represents the best summer of your life. ✨
These aren’t just pieces of cotton and ink; they are the soundtrack of your life in fabric form. But let’s be real: most of the time, these custom t-shirts end up living in a plastic bin under the bed or a forgotten bag in the back of the closet. That’s where I come in. I believe those memories deserve an encore! Today, I want to give you a little behind-the-scenes look at how I turn those "retired" tour tees into a handmade t-shirt quilt that’s as functional as it is sentimental, so you can see the care and craftsmanship behind every order.
Why Your Concert Tees Belong in a Quilt
We’ve all been there. You’re cleaning out your closet, you find that vintage Metallica or Taylor Swift shirt, and for a second, you’re back in the front row. You smell the pyrotechnics, you feel the bass in your chest, and you remember exactly who you were with. But then you realize the pits are stained, or the neckline is stretched, and you can’t exactly wear it to the grocery store anymore.
Instead of letting those memories gather dust, turning them into memory quilts from clothes gives them a second life. A t-shirt blanket isn't just a way to save space; it’s a way to wrap yourself in your favorite moments. Whether it's a collection of heavy metal tour dates or a series of indie folk festival tees, these quilts become a legacy of your musical journey.

How I Prep Your Memories
One of the biggest things I do for my customers is take the scary part off your plate. I know how emotional it can feel to cut into your favorite concert shirts or sweatshirts, especially when they hold years of stories. That’s why I handle that first step with so much care.
Following my original The Quilted Tee prep method, I start with scissors, not the rotary cutter. I first cut off the sleeves. Then I cut away the neckline. After that, I open up the shirt by cutting along the seams as needed so I can separate the front and back and work with flatter sections of fabric. I’m not aiming for perfection in that first pass. I’m carefully removing the bulky parts and getting each shirt or sweatshirt into a workable shape for the next stage of the quilt-making process.
I Prep Sweatshirts Too
Here is a little behind-the-scenes detail I love to share: I don’t work with only t-shirts. Sweatshirts can absolutely be part of a quilt too. I prep them in a similar way by removing the sleeves and neckline first, then breaking the garment down into flatter sections. That extra thickness can add such a cozy, substantial feel to keepsake blankets from shirts, and I make sure those pieces are handled with the same care as every tee.
How I Make Your Shirt Blocks Stable for Sewing
If you’ve ever wondered what helps a t-shirt quilt look polished and hold up beautifully over time, this is a big part of it. T-shirt fabric is stretchy by nature, which makes it comfortable to wear, but that same stretch can make it tricky when I’m turning your shirts into a quilt.
To give each piece the support it needs, I use Pellon 950F stabilizer on the back of each shirt section. This gives the knit fabric more structure and helps make it stable for sewing. It’s one of those behind-the-scenes quality steps that really matters, because it helps me create blocks that are easier to piece accurately and helps your finished quilt feel durable and beautifully made.
How I Press With Care
When I’m pressing the stabilizer in place, I take my time. I make sure the adhesive side is against the back of the shirt, exactly where it belongs.
Anisa’s Pro Tip: No adhesive on the iron. That is one of my biggest prep reminders in the studio. I double-check placement before pressing so the fusible side does not end up facing the iron. That little bit of extra care protects the fabric, protects my tools, and helps me keep every piece looking its best.
Once the Pellon 950F is pressed onto the back, the shirt piece feels much more controlled and much more stable for sewing, which is exactly what I want before I move on.

How I Square Everything Up for a Beautiful Finish
Once your shirts are prepped, cut down, and stabilized, I move into the precise stage. This is where the magic really starts to show and the collection of shirts begins to look like a real custom t-shirt quilt.
In my studio, I use square acrylic rulers to keep things consistent. I typically reach for a 15.5" ruler for those big, bold chest graphics or a 10.5" ruler for smaller pocket logos or back-of-the-shirt tour dates. I use a rotary cutter and mat to create straight, clean edges, because that precision plays a big part in the polished finish and long-lasting quality of your quilt.

How I Choose the Right Backing
While the front of the quilt is all about the memories, the back of the quilt is all about the feel. At The Quilted Tee, I want your quilt to be the one you grab every single night when you’re curling up on the sofa.
For the backing, I usually recommend:
- Flannel: If I’m creating that ultimate "cabin in the woods" warmth. It’s soft, a little fuzzy, and pairs beautifully with the weight of the t-shirts.
- Cotton: If I’m creating a lighter, breathable feel that works well year-round.
Choosing the right backing fabric is one more part of the craftsmanship behind your order. I’m not just making something beautiful to look at; I’m making something meaningful that feels wonderful to use.

Behind the Machine: Why I Do What I Do
People often ask me why I spend my days surrounded by piles of old clothes. For me, it’s never just about the sewing. It’s about the stories. Every time I lay out a new project, like our The Quilted Tee T-Shirt Quilt, I feel like I'm getting a glimpse into someone's happiest moments.
I’ve been quilting for decades, and the joy of seeing a client’s face when they see their old shirts transformed into a work of art never gets old. It’s a way of honoring the past while creating something that will last for years to come. I love sharing these behind-the-scenes details because I want you to understand the craftsmanship, care, and intention that go into every quilt I make. ✨
If a full quilt feels like too big of a leap right now, we also love making smaller pieces, like a Single Shirt Memory Pillow. It's a beautiful way for me to preserve your memories in a smaller keepsake.
